Standing at the edge of the city looking in, we knew the days ahead would be tough. This enclave had strict xenophobic rules about outsiders after dark. We knew no people who would stand by us if it came to that. It would. We needed to make some friends, fast.

One of the side effects no one anticipated with the War on Terror was that it went much the same way as the War on Drugs. Terrorism and fear of it became commonplace and mundane. Teenagers started experimenting with car bombs younger and younger. It’s ridiculous. Should’ve seen it coming.

It never stops. It just pours and pours from the sky. Twenty days and counting, the rain is winning. Floods have taken the valley. They even say that the ocean has risen. The weathermen have given up on predicting when it will stop. At least when it rains, it’s cool.

The big old vacant house sometimes made noises in the middle of the night. Those settling groans always wake me. Gun, it’s in my hand. Downstairs, secured tightly. All climb points, booby-trapped. I’m safe. There’s nobody here. Empty neighborhoods were rarely targets. No, that’s a footstep! Okay, stay calm.

Nothing like a home cooked meal. Everyone knows that. But fresh real food is hard to come across these days. Trucks stopped running for the
most part after the riots. The trick is: find something the farmers want. Trade. Make friends. Build bridges. Alway be cool. Then feast for days.

Back in ’09, when money still meant something, I bought this set of solar panels. It set me back like 800 bucks, plus shipping, quite a bit, back then. Now after the crash, post peak oil, after the wires stopped humming, I am the King of Charging. And I charge them plenty.

Some crashers took over the old channel five station on Sunset. The previous owners never got a chance to sell off the obsolete analog broadcast system. They play great stuff from 9am to midnight, and awesome Dj sets all night from real djs. Makes me want to loot a bigscreen again.

Everyone had opinions about how the world would end. The real shame is that they were all partially right. It was war, famine, pestilence and death. It was foolishness and apathy and pigheadedness that finally dropped us into chaos and the darker ages, I’m a lucky one. I’m a Crasher.
